King’s College London holds the library collection of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), comprising over 60,000 books, pamphlets, manuscripts and other material ranging in date from the 16th to the 21st century. Strengths of the collection include travel, exploration and discovery; war and cold war; diplomacy and peace-keeping; the growth, rule and decline of empire; colonial emigration and settlement; the creation of the Commonwealth; and trade, transport and communication.

We are creating a small team of project cataloguers and library assistants to assist with the sorting, cataloguing and processing of material in this collection dating from the late 19th century onwards. The successful candidates will join the staff of the Foyle Special Collections Library, which forms part of the College’s Maughan Library, Chancery Lane.

The team’s principal objective will be the cataloguing and processing of designated items to ensure their speedy transit to the shelf.   One Project Cataloguer post and both Library Assistant posts will focus primarily on the post-1901 pamphlet collection;  in addition, the Library Assistants will process and shelve all items catalogued by the project team.  The other two Project Cataloguers will focus primarily on material relating to the causes, course and aftermath of the First World War, both in the FCO Collection and in some of our other named special collections. For this element of the project a reading knowledge of German would be helpful.  For all posts the ability to combine speed with accuracy, to meet challenging targets and to work effectively in a team are essential.

All posts are fixed-term contracts, to 31 July 2013.

The closing date for applications for all posts is Monday 19 November 2012
