Alison,

We have also been doing this properly for about 4 years. We send them
out 4 days before books are due back and 2 days before charged items are
due back. The only way our customers can opt out is to opt out of email
notices altogether. Like Jon, we have found that a number of customers
have come to rely on these reminders. When we first introduced them our
email set up was not right which meant that many did not get through,
and this did cause a few issues. We had to do quite a bit of tinkering
to ensure reliable delivery. When we introduced them we didn't measure
the impact on fine income, we were more interested in getting items back
on time so providing a better service for customers. About a third of
our active borrowers get email notices and courtesy notices is one of
the ways we can encourage users to sign up for email notices (with the
big savings on postal ones).

Our courtesy notice (4 day) text is: (but this was set-up when we were
limited on the amount of text we could put in)

Subject: Courtesy notices

Hello all

We are introducing courtesy notices and would like to know -

*	How many days before the item is due back are courtesy notices
emailed to customers?
*	Has anyone noticed the impact on income?
*	What is the wording of your courtesy notice?
*	Can customers opt out not to receive courtesy notices?
*	Anything else it is thought useful for us to know.

Thank you
