Well, we've found Scholar useful when faced with an extremely dodgy reference....

Other than that, I'd prefer users went for PubMed & emailed us references which we picked up for them full text from Medline!

And google scholar advanced is still available if one googles it..... On this page, you may be as precise as you wish, and omit patents, etc.

Subject: [LIS-MEDICAL] What advantages do Pubmed/HDAS have over Google Scholar?

Dear Colleagues,

While preparing for a training session, I’ve been doing some comparisons of results on various databases and search engines to see the numbers of hits. Although I have only been doing some rudimentary quick searches for sake of comparison (just in the article title field), I still think these results are really interesting. They make me pose the question in the title of this email: so what advantages do Pubmed/HDAS have over Google Scholar?

Results

Article title field searches –

Keyword: Aripiprazole

Pubmed: 1152 results

Embase: 1745 results

Scholar: 2700 results

Keyword: Risperidone

Pubmed: 2984 results

Embase: 4065 results

Scholar: 6930 results

Keyword: Kleptomania

Pubmed: 110 results

Scholar: 239 results

As regards my question, here are a few things I can think of:

Advantages of Pubmed/HDAS over Scholar

-          You can tick boxes to save your results in a nice PDF document

-          You can save search histories

-          When they do work, full text links can be implemented without individual user input across numerous computers in the Trust

Advantages of Scholar over Pubmed/HDAS

-          No need to fiddle with MeSH and subject headings – still seems (at least upon superficial glancing) to retrieve more results

-          Searches across a number of different subjects and disciplines all at once, no need to change your database

-          No need to sign in with Athens (although the same could be said of Pubmed, until you want particular full text articles)

-          No need to sign up for Athens altogether and have to remember a username and password

-          Search interface has one easy to use search bar

-          Searches dissertations, book literature, court opinions and conference proceedings all at once

All seem to offer email alerts and linking in to reference manager software. At the moment my advantages for Google Scholar list seems to be longer than the advantages for Pubmed/HDAS. Am I missing something?

Thanks,

Anita.
