Boccaccio e la finzione narrativa:

forme, temi e ricezione

In occasione del VII centenario della nascita di Giovanni Boccaccio, il Dipartimento di Italianistica dell’Università di Toronto organizza un convegno che si propone di approfondire con un’ampia prospettiva il Decameron. L'approccio critico terrà conto del valore fondativo per la narrativa occidentale del capolavoro dello scrittore certaldese nonché dell'influenza che esso continua ad esercitare sulla letteratura occidentale. Verranno privilegiati i seguenti temi:

1. Forme della narrazione

• modelli linguistici della tradizione narrativa boccacciana
• Strategie narrative del Decameron: il macrosistema della cornice e altri modelli della tradizione narrativa orientale e occidentale
• Il genere-novella da Boccaccio al Novecento tra realismo e finzione.

2. Temi

·         Gli opposti nel Decameron: tragico e comico grottesco, filoginia e misoginia, l'utile e il dilettevole, il mirabile e il vero

·         Confini dell'immaginario: l'avventura nel Decameron come ricerca ed esplorazione

·         La narratrice: l'élite intellettuale femminile nel Decameron e nelle opere boccacciane

3. Intertestualità europea

• La letteratura d'invenzione europea e il Decameron.  La letteratura in lingua d'oc e d'oil, la letteratura spagnola ed araba, la letteratura esemplare ed altri confini del narrare
• Fonti classiche e il Decameron
• La ricezione di Boccaccio in Europa: i Racconti di Canterbury di Chaucer; l’Heptaméron di Margherita di Navarra, le Novelle esemplari di Cervantes.

La durata di ogni relazione non deve superare i 20 minuti.  Le relazioni possono essere in italiano o in inglese.

I relatori sono pregati di sottoporre la versione finale della relazione entro il 30 aprile 2013 di modo che possa essere valutata da un comitato scientifico per inclusione negli atti del convegno.  Le norme redazionali e i caratteri principali dei contributi saranno postati nella pagina web. Gli atti verranno pubblicati alla fine del 2013.

The Narrative Fiction of Giovanni Boccaccio:

Forms, Themes and Reception

Department of Italian Studies

February 28 – March 2, 2013

On the occasion of the 7th centenary of Giovanni Boccaccio’s birth, the Department of Italian Studies, University of Toronto is organizing an International Conference to study the Decameron from a wide variety of perspectives.  The critical approach will take into consideration the foundational impact that Boccaccio’s masterpiece has had, and continues to have, on Western literature. In this light, priority will be given to the following themes:

1. Narrative Forms

• Linguistic models of the Boccacian tradition
• Narrative strategies in the Decameron: the macrosystem of the cornice and other models of the Oriental and Western tradition
• The genre of the novella from Boccaccio to the 20th century: between reality and fiction

2. Themes

• Opposition in the Decameron: the tragic and the comic grotesque; philogyny and misogyny; the useful and the pleasurable; the marvellous and the true
• The boundaries of the imagination: adventure in the Decameron as research and exploration
• The female narrator: the intellectual elite in the Decameron and Boccaccio’s other works

3. European Intertextuality

• The Decameron and the European literature of invention:  the literature of the langue d'oc and d'oil; Spanish literature; Arabic literature; the exemplary literature and other narrative boundaries
• The Decameron and its classical sources
• Boccaccio’s reception in Europe: Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales; Marguerite of Navarra’s Heptameron; Cervantes’s Novelle esemplari

Papers should be approximately 20 minutes in length and may be either in Italian or English.

Deadline for Submissions:  November 30, 2012. Electronic submissions are encouraged. Acceptances will be notified by December 15, 2012.

Proceedings of Conference (Full Papers)

All speakers will be required to submit a final version of their paper by April 30, 2013 for inclusion in the Proceedings. Articles will be peer-reviewed. Guidelines for the full paper will be posted on the conference website. The proceedings will be published at the end of 2013.
