* PhD Scholarships in Literatures, Languages and Cultures at the
University of Edinburgh *

The School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures is delighted to
announce a new initiative that will see over £500,000 invested across
the next three years in scholarships for outstanding PhD students
joining the School's vibrant postgraduate research community.

Ten new scholarships will be awarded to PhD candidates commencing
their research studies in the academic year 2013-2014 in any of the
disciplines within the School.

The School provides a stimulating and supportive research environment
across a wide range of subject areas: Asian Studies, Celtic & Scottish
Studies, English Literature, European Languages & Cultures, and
Islamic & Middle Eastern Studies. We also offer an exciting range of
cross-disciplinary PhD programmes including Film Studies,
Trans-disciplinary Documentary Film, and Translation Studies.

The scholarships will cover tuition fees at the Home/EU rate
(currently £3,828 p.a.), plus an annual maintenance stipend of
c.£13,590 for three years. The stipend will increase in line with the
Arts and Humanities Council maintenance grant. Overseas students are
welcome to apply for the scholarships but should note that, if
successful, they will need to pay the difference between the Home/EU
tuition fee and the overseas tuition fee. Currently the difference is
£7,622.

The application deadline is 1 February 2013, and by this date
applicants should already have applied for a PhD place at Edinburgh.
We expect to notify successful applicants in early March.
