My grandmother remembers being at boarding school during the war and singing To Be A Pilgrim / He Who Would Valiant Be with the last line changed from "To be a pilgrim" to "To be a grim pill" which her sisters apparently found hilarious.

Was inspired to ring my Mum, as a result of Sophie’s e-mail. My Mum is 82 and, as she was trying to fry some belly pork for her lunch, wasn’t able to multi-task and only gave me 5 songs:

·         Nymphs and Shepherds

·         Bobby Shaftoe

·         If I were a blackbird (I’d whistle and sing)

·         Brahm’s lullaby

·         Jesus Bids Us Shine (I remember singing this one too and liked the imagery of sitting in a dark corner with a lit candle in my hands. I was a lonely child…)

Hope this is of use/interest?

Hi there

I decided to pass your request onto my Ma as I thought she might have an entertaining morning coming up with some of her completely random songs from the past ...

She was actually at school at the start of the 50’s but she reckons these were songs from the 40’s.

Sally Brown – this song hilariously contains the lines, ‘she drinks rum and chews tobacco’.  Love the idea of my 7 year old Ma learning that song.

They sang them at school and learnt them by regularly listening to a radio programme called Time & Tune:

Hello GEM,

Short and sweet request - any inspiration or ideas on this - what were children singing in school during these decades??

Many thanks,

Lisa
