Hi Sara

I'm going on the 5th and am in fighting mood especially when I'm stuck between stoopid JCQ and stoopid teachers....not sure which is worse....JCQ who want lots of painting of pictures and paperwork doing or teachers who don't see why you should have any paperwork at all to support concessions and that I am being awkward in demanding it and refusing to make arrangements without any evidence!!!

I feel a headache coming on...

Thanks Duncan!

Is there an event of some sort happening on the 5th regarding access arrangements? I think I should go but I'm scared of what they'll come up with next!

I have never used one and would doubt if I have met a student who is entitled to one under the "normal way of working" requirement. Ofqual (my second favourite organisation to JCQ) make the following

observations:

http://comment.ofqual.gov.uk/section96/part-4-specified-measures/oral-language-modifiers-current-situation/

OLMs are currently allowed across all subjects. However, there are some concerns regarding the quality of the modifications they provide. For the majority of examinations for which they are requested, they are not actually used to modify language. Information from examination cover sheets submitted to the JCQ from the summer 2010 examination period shows that although OLMs were present in exams on 1482 occasions, on

1042 of these occasions OLMs were not required to modify language.

So it appears that most are not correctly used which implies that they aren't used as a "normal way of working".

It looks like January will be fun!

Regards

Duncan

Hello All

Has anyone organised for any of their students to use a Modifier in an exam? If so what did you do??

One of my specialist assessors recently attended the PATOSS training event, and our friend Nick Lait was in attendance. If a student is assessed to have good reading abilities and their speed of writing is fine, but they cannot understand the text, we can apply for a Modifier.

When questioned about this she was told that a member of staff must attend a course(?) PATOSS apparently offer one, so that they can act as a modifier.

Those in attendance was also told that the JCQ inspections for access arrangements will be starting up again from January.

So sorry if I've spoiled your Wednesday afternoon!
