The various documents available via the link below indicate that responses to the first consultation (conducted during the summer holiday period 2012) was astonishingly low - totalling just 318! See extract below. Overview of responses The organisational breakdown of respondents was as follows: Higher Education* 144; Primary School 79; Secondary School 28; Local Authority 12; Organisations representing school teachers 12; Other 10; Subject Association 9; Parent 8; Academy/Free School 7; Employer/Business Sector 7; Special School 1; Young Person 1; Total: 318. * There was a mini campaign from Warwick University students (123 responses) which resulted in the high number of higher education responses. They answered Q1a and b only and were very supportive of the proposal. The Government now "proposes to require primary schools to teach one or more of French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Spanish or a classical language (Latin or Ancient Greek)" - commencing in year 3 (age: 7) - from September 2014. The second consultation (closing 16 December 2012) invites comments on just two final questions - whether you agree to the requirement that schools should teach one of the above 5 languages (giving reasons for your views), together with any further comments on the Draft Order (attached in an Annex). I'd like to encourage members to respond/forward it to other interested parties such as: Primary Education depts; local primary schools/advisors; students and parents; in the hope that the response rate can be substantially improved this time around. Hope you can find 10 mins. to influence this far-reaching policy decision. Schools would, of course, be free to teach other languages in addition if they wish to do so.
