Dear all,

As I'm not sure whether or not this email list supports attachments, here is the text of the flyer advertising the ASET Research Bursary. PLEASE NOTE it is designed to provide a student or recent graduate with a short term placement conducting research into work based and/or placement learning.

2013 ASET Research Bursary

For Research into Placement or Work-Based Learning

ASET is pleased to announce our second Research Bursary, inviting proposals from supervisors to fund an undergraduate or recent graduate to carry out a clearly defined piece of research into work-based or placement learning. ASET will provide a bursary of £1500 for the student to carry out the planned work, of approximately 300 hours; a further £500 towards the expenses required to carry out the work will be awarded to the institution upon successful completion. The student will be visited by a member of the ASET Practice and Research Group (PRG) during the planned placement period. The successful applicant must supervise the student's work, and co-present the final report at the ASET conference.

Timing

It is expected that applications will specify a plan of the work (see Criteria below for more details), which should commit the student to 300 hours of work, during which time supervision must be available for at least 200 of the 300 hours.

Eligibility

Proposals can only be considered from those institutions which are members of ASET for 2013. A full and current membership list is available here: www.asetonline.org/membership.htm#currentmembers<http://www.asetonline.org/membership.htm#currentmembers> . If successful you must recruit an undergraduate or recent graduate from your own institution.

Criteria

Proposals are limited to 1000 words and must cover:

·         The project definition and description;

·         The supervisor's role in the project, and his or her research expertise, evidenced by qualifications and/or publications;

·         The student's work within the project, including objectives, and a work programme specifying activities and approximate dates for their completion;

·         Agreement of support from a named senior manager in the university;

· An indication of the students to whom this opportunity will be made available, and how you intend to recruit.

The ASET Best Practice Guidelines for placement supervision should be followed as far as possible.

Submitting your proposal

Proposals must be in English, word processed, and not more than 1000 words. You may include illustrations, but you may not use appendices. Your entry must be e-mailed to arrive on or before the

closing date of 31st January 2013 and should be sent to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

Guidance

It is expected that the bursary is most likely to fund a specific part of a larger project. We suggest you might consider one of the following as work for an ASET-funded student:

· The processing and analysis of data already collected

·         A literature review

· The design and piloting of a questionnaire

· The testing of a questionnaire's validity or reliability

· The investigation of a potential area for research, for example, the problems and pitfalls of a "read-across" project, that is, the application to a new area of research carried out elsewhere

Terms and conditions

Entries that fail to meet the above criteria will be rejected; if no suitable proposals of a sufficiently high standard are received no award will be made.

The ASET Practice and Research Group will make their decisions against the above criteria, with the Chair of the Group having the final decision. No correspondence over the decision will entered into.

Entrants will be notified of the result by the end of March 2013 at the latest. The student selected must have the right to work in the UK; the bursary will be paid to the recipient directly from ASET. The student must not be in receipt of any other bursaries from the institution. A report on the placement must be presented to the ASET Conference in September 2013 by the student and the supervisor, and monies from the research expenses fund paid to the institution must be retained to pay for the member of staff to attend. The student will not be asked to pay the cost of attending the conference.

The final placement report is to be submitted by e-mail to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> by October 31st 2013.
