We are in the process of agreeing to share our Council Offices with the police, who are losing their local station.

As part of the arrangement we will have a ‘shared’ reception area where police and council staff will deal with their own and each other’s ‘customer’ queries (up to a certain point i.e. Council staff will not be recording crimes etc).

As I understand it, when the ‘police staff’ deal with a Council query (using Council data) they are simply acting as a data processor for us or is this too complicated or do I need a data processing agreement?

On another point, our reception area is like many Council’s (and Doctors surgery’s etc), where personal data is often verbally exchanged in a public place. Do I need to consider DP/privacy issues any more than I usually would because of the influx of a different ‘customer’?

I’d appreciate any Friday thoughts.

Steve
