This post, which is for 18 months, is for a Research Associate position working on a project funded under the Research Councils UK Digital Economy Theme, an RCUK cross-council initiative led by EPSRC and contributed to by AHRC, ESRC and MRC. The project will create and field-test digital tools designed to link food consumption and production through the traceability of specific products and animals, in a series of experimental situations in different food and farming environments mainly in Yorkshire. The research will use in-depth, qualitative social science techniques to engage users in responding to research questions about the effectiveness of digital technologies in reconnecting producers and consumers, the capabilities and accessibility of existing technologies, and the potential for digital technologies to support farm and food business sustainability. The post will be based at Hull, and the project is managed by Dr. Lewis Holloway and Dr. Sally Eden (Department of Geography, University of Hull), Dr. David Grey (Department of Computer Science, University of Hull) and Dr. Chris Speed (Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh). The Research Associate will play a full role in all aspects of the project, including research planning, field research, analysis and dissemination of results to a range of audiences. The post will involve a range of activities including: researching secondary data sources; interview and experimental research with food producers and consumers in a range of setting; report writing; presenting research findings; project publicity and website content; coordinating and managing a project Consultation Panel and end of project workshop Candidates should have, or be close to completing, a PhD in an appropriate social science (e.g. human geography, sociology, anthropology, science and technology studies, etc.) and should have experience of qualitative research techniques. Candidates should have good communication skills and be able to take responsibility for providing administrative support for the research. It would be an advantage to have had experience of social scientific research related to food and/or farming and/or digital consumption/economy, but this is not essential.
