ESRC and ESRC CASE doctoral funding
Candidates are invited to apply for ESRC and ESRC CASE doctoral funding with Royal Holloway, University of London, specializing in Geopolitics and Security within the Politics, Development and Sustainability research group of the Department of Geography.
The Department of Geography, Royal Holloway, part of the ESRC South East Doctoral Training Centre are inviting applications for an award to fund a part or full-time 1+3 (Masters for those without one + PhD) or +3 (for those already with appropriate Masters).
We are particularly interested in applications and ideas for projects that engage in the following research themes and interests:
- Communications and digital-diplomacy; technologies such as social media, radio and broadcasting; rumour; information security
- Borders, urban sovereignty and spatial activism – especially in the Middle East
- Polar geopolitics, territorial disputes, sovereignty claims and resource politics
- Verticality and the volumetric; airpower; aerial and subterranean spatialities
- Circulations and mobilities governance; biopolitics of security; airports and ports
- Affect and materiality; intimacy, sensation and touch
- Emergencies and crisis management; civil contingencies; evacuation mobilities; disaster and development
- Expression, creativity and geopolitics and security; conspiracy; counter-factual geographies
- GIS and geovisualisation, militarism, surveillance, counter-mapping; critical theorization
Geopolitics and Security is a new initiative and post-graduate community within the Politics, Development and Sustainability research group within the Department of Geography, and contains the new Geopolitics and Security MSc and blog
http://www.rhulgeopolitics.wordpress.com. The group benefits from strong ties with the department of Politics and International Relations and the Information Security Group at RHUL. Applications will also be considered in collaboration with the Cultural Geography research grouping.
Application procedure:
Candidates must meet the following criteria to apply:
- Only Home and EU students are eligible to apply (due to AHRC & ESRC stipulations).
- EU students must have been resident in the UK for more than 3 years on 30 September 2013.
- Have, or be projected to achieve, a first-class social science undergraduate degree or at least a 2:1 if the candidate is undertaking or has undertaken a relevant Masters degree.
- Be able to work collaboratively on the proposal with RHUL in December 2012 and January 2013.
- Be able to take up the funding, if awarded, in September 2013.
- Interested candidates should (ideally) first contact to discuss, and then send the following documents to one of the potential supervisors/advisers below.
- 1 page outline of a PhD project idea, detailing aims, primary material and methods
- If the project is for a potential CASE collaborative award to be carried out with a non-academic partner organisation in the private, public or voluntary sector, the application should outline in a paragraph the potential partner organization, how it will benefit them and whether contacts already exist
- CV
- Scan of degree transcript or (if still completing an undergraduate degree) an indication of grades achieved in first- and second-year courses.
