Job description
Rosalind Franklin Fellowship
- Career track for an assistant professor in geography of leisure and tourism.
To
promote the advancement of talented international researchers at the
highest levels of the institution, the University of Groningen has
initiated the prestigious Rosalind Franklin Fellowship programme. The
ambitious programme has been running since 2007 and financed thus far
over sixty fellowships.
The Rosalind Franklin Fellowship programme is primarily directed at women in industry, academia or research institutes who have a PhD and aim for a career towards full professorship in a European top research university. The fellowship offers career opportunities to work in international leading milieus and is only awarded to outstanding researchers.
Successful candidates will be expected to establish an independent, externally funded research program in collaboration with colleagues at our university and elsewhere. They will also be expected to participate in and contribute to the development of the teaching programme of their discipline.
We invite ambitious academics who aim for a career towards full professorship to apply for this position.
A fellowship is starting in 2013 in the Faculty of Spatial Sciences.
Applicants preferably have:
• a PhD degree in a relevant area
• exemplary research record demonstrated by publications in international top journals and/or in peer reviewed books
• proof of independence and international recognition
• experience in various working environments, preferably in different countries
• successful in acquiring external funding for research projects
• teaching experience or proven inclination for teaching demonstrated by tutoring/mentoring individuals or small groups
• demonstrable organizational qualities and communication skills
• a
well-founded and motivated application with an innovative research plan
for the first five years and a challenging outlook for the future which
takes into account the international research landscape in their field
of specialization.
Expectations
The successful candidate is expected to build a research
programme in the area of geography of leisure and tourism. Any topic
within this broad space will be considered. The Faculty of Spatial
Sciences has an overarching research theme of ‘Wellbeing, Innovation and
Spatial Transformation’. Applicants should demonstrate how their
research in the area of tourism and/or leisure connects to this theme.
The two departments of Economic and Cultural Geography, which work
closely together, are especially interested in the role of tourism
and/or leisure in regional development, regional identity and place
branding/marketing of tourism destinations, and the contribution of
leisure to wellbeing. Nevertheless, the fellowship is open to all topics
within the broad field of geography of leisure and tourism, and the
strongest applicant will be offered the appointment irrespective of the
precise topic of interest in that field.

Rosalind Franklin
Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958) completed her undergraduate and
graduate studies in Chemistry at the University of Cambridge at the age
of 26. Her research at the laboratory of Kings College, London, was an
important contribution to the discovery of the structure of DNA.
Franklin used X-ray crystallography in her research, whereas her colleague Wilkins used molecular methods. At the same time, Watson and Crick at the University of Cambridge were trying to discover the structure of DNA using a theoretical modelling approach. When they became aware of the results of Franklin’s experiments and saw her X-ray photos (unbeknownst to Franklin), they realized that they had empirical evidence for their theory of the double helix.
Unfortunately they did not include her in their publications. Franklin died of cancer at the age of 37, probably as a result of inadequate radiation safety measures. Had she survived, she would have become one of the most renowned female scientists of her generation in Europe. Today her work is a shining example to young, brilliant female scientists who are engaged in a career in science.

Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: Five years
Maximum hours per week: 38
The Rosalind Franklin Fellow will be appointed in a Tenure Track position within the Faculty of Spatial Sciences.
Additional conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers the fellowship for a maximum of
five years at a salary of at least € 3195 gross per month (full time
position, scale 11). The salary and the duration of the fellowship will
depend on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
Subject to a favorable evaluation after a maximum of five years, the
fellow will be awarded tenure and promotion to the rank of Associate
Professor. After a period of four to maximum seven years another
evaluation will take place and if this proves favorable, promotion to
Full Professor will follow.
