Placing the Global Financial Crisis

What are the interscalar repercussions of the global financial crisis? This session questions oft-repeated imaginaries of global capitalism as being somehow “up there” and seeks to flesh out such disembodied framings with an understanding of particular places as key, ‘actually existing’ sites in the ongoing production and reproduction of the global political-economy. We welcome papers that focus on how specific places both shape and are shaped by the global political economy in light of the 2008-2010 crisis and its ongoing cumulative consequences. We are particularly interested in papers that approach the crisis with an awareness of relational connections and interscalar relationships. While much research has focused on the uneven development produced by financial flows, this session aims to explore how the workings of these flows, in return, pivot on interactions with local actors, places, governance, and social relationships.

Some topics that could be addressed by papers in this session include, but are not limited to:

We aim for a comparative lens, either within the papers themselves or across the session as a whole. We welcome both grounded empirical analyses and theoretical arguments.
