As part of a recent grant awarded by the Wellcome Trust, St Hugh’s College is seeking a conservator to provide basic training to our project archivist concerning collections care and rehousing. In particular, the award stipulates that the
project archivist be trained in the following tasks:
How to safely and speedily remove treasury tags
How to safely and speedily remove rusty staples and pins
When to leave staples and pins in place
How to house loose groups of papers in paper folds and four flap folders
How and when to open out corners
Handling weak and flimsy papers
Disposal of old acidic packaging with information/annotation
Disposal of plastic sleeves and items with plastic elements (e.g., comb bindings)
Identification of specific types of photographic prints and packaging
How to re-package x-rays
How to identify and prepare items for conservation treatment
It is envisioned that this training would take no more than a day. £400 from the grant, plus travel expenses, are earmarked to provide the training.
