Dear All,
I wanted to thank everyone for the responses on the question about an Archives/ County Record Office video tour.
Overall people liked the idea and many have used it. Some notes of caution were raised regarding length, purpose, and content. People who had them suggested that shorter was better and the average length was around 4 minutes.
The purpose of the video had to be clear. Otherwise, the video could be seen as decoration rather than information or guidance. In some cases, they were used to instruct new visitors on how the archives worked, which could prove counter-productive if most visitors are experienced in archives.
The content was important because the material can quickly become dated if opening hours or other information changes. Most focused on a point of view (POV) approach or the customer journey approach to explaining the archives.
Overall, though, people who had them thought they were a good idea. One question that lingered was how best to market or promote the video. People were curious about ways to leverage them into better awareness of their services and what they had to offer.
Another challenge was that many people were part of a larger organisation so could not control their marketing or choice over whether to have the video. A particular concern in this area was the potential cost. Even thought the equipment was less expensive and it was easier to get training or expertise in the equipment, there was (is) a cost to creating and editing a video.
I want to thank everyone for responses on and off the list. I hope this is useful for considering whether a video or similar social media message is of use to your archives.
Best,
Lawrence
