Peer Supported Improvement and Training and Development Opportunity

The London Cultural Improvement Programme was instrumental in driving improvement in the culture and sport sector at the time of Audit Commission, CPA and CAA assessments, catapulting London from being the worst performing region to the best in under three years. This was achieved by developing a peer supported improvement programme, a legacy of which is the London Cultural Peer Bank.

In a post inspection world all councils have signed an agreement with the LGA to support sector led improvement and to release peers for this purpose free of charge. Many organisations are now embracing peer supported improvement not only as a way to drive sector led improvement but also to offer learning opportunity to develop peers into the leaders of the future. An example of this is the TNA’s new accreditation scheme which will be underpinned by peer supported improvement.

The London Cultural Peer Bank is looking to expand, so that it can offer a broader range of peers to provide peer challenge to local authorities across London. In particular it is seeking to attract peers from the archive sector which is currently under represented.

A free workshop has been organised on Monday 10th December, from 10am to 5pm at London Councils http://www.londoncouncils.gov.uk/aboutus/contact.htm

The workshop will introduce the concept of peer supported improvement and train participants in the use of techniques to enable them to support their peers in other Authorities

Goals of the Workshop

1.       A clear understanding of the concept of ‘peer-supported improvement’ and how it will work within the current context

2.       A clear understanding of the role of a ‘peer’…and what it is not!

3.       Insight to the concepts of coaching & mentoring and the ‘GROW’ process

4.       The foundation skills & techniques to coach & mentor each other

5.       Enhanced communication, rapport building, listening and questioning skills

6.       Individual work-related improvement & development goals and actions

Workshop Style

The workshop is delivered using a coaching style (i.e. not a traditional ‘training’ style).  This means there is only a small amount of formal presentation and imparting of information; the workshop mostly comprises discussion, demonstrations, practice & peer feedback relating to relevant & ‘real’ challenges.
