Dear Dr. Davidson:

I think there is some evidence gathered that shows risks of POCT devices that are regulated.
The MAUDE database in the USA can be queried online.
http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfmaude/search.cfm

I think this database attributes ~15 deaths to problems with glucose meters during the past 10 years ( such as mis-reading maltose in
peritoneal dialysis patients or false-positive results due to some disinfecting wipes resulting in large
insulin doses). If there are 15 deaths.... I am sure there are a much larger number of near misses.

This may not be 'concrete' evidence, but it may help focus your search.

regards, Andrew

Subject: Harm due to POCT deficiencies

Dear collective,

I am struggling to find concrete evidence of the risks involved in unregulated POCT- I know the anecdotal stories of QC results being taken as patient results, or high glucoses due to sugary drinks on patients fingertips etc...but does anyone have documented evidence of adverse effects of POCT that they can share?

Many thanks, Elaine
