As smoothing as well as GLM are fully linear operations (double check 
the equations in the SPM book), and therefore commutative, I do not 
think it is mathematically any different (for resulting b/t-values) 
whether you first 'regress out' the movement parameters, smooth, and 
then do GLM, or smooth, and do GLM with movement parameters included. I 
think that's why the order you suggest can't be batched, as it is much 
slower and doesn't make any a-priori sense (to me at least).

But perhaps I am overlooking something here, there might be a 
non-linearity in the whitening procedure? Others might shed their light 
on this.

Why would you prefer one order over the other?
