*** Hydra UK event, London School of Economics and Political Science, Thursday 22nd November ***

The international Hydra project* (http://projecthydra.org) started in 2008 with the aim of producing ways in which flexible repository solutions might be enabled and exploited through configurable interfaces.  Primarily working over Fedora, though with applicability in wider repository contexts, the project has achieved this aim, and a series of ‘Hydra heads’ have been implemented over the past year at different institutions that demonstrate the varied digital content management use cases Hydra can be applied to (see details and screencasts at http://projecthydra.org/apps-demos-2-2/).

As part of the project’s community engagement, a Hydra UK event is now being organised to showcase the work of those institutions in the UK using and exploring Hydra for their own needs, and provide a forum for discussion of solutions for digital content management and preservation.  Details are as follows:

What: Hydra UK event
When: Thursday 22nd November 2012, 11:00am – 4:00pm
Where: LSE Library, London
How: Please respond to me, Chris Awre ([log in to unmask]">[log in to unmask]), to book a place.  Numbers are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Who: The day will be appropriate for repository and digital content collection managers, but also cover Hydra’s technical base for repository developers and IT colleagues.

The day will primarily consist of contributions from Hull, LSE, Glasgow Caledonian, and Oxford, but also provide plenty of discussion time to look at different use cases and questions around what Hydra is being used for and why.  MediaShelf, a technical consultancy informing the development of Hydra, will also provide input.  However, the day is also being loosely structured to accommodate topics that you, the audience would like to focus on, in the style of an unconference.  Please let us know if there are particular topics you would like to address.  Digital content management use cases that will be addressed include research outputs (including research data), audiovisual materials (sound, images and video), digital archives, and preservation across these, all of which Hydra is being used to address by the various institutions using it.

This event follows on from presentation of Hydra at the Open Repositories 2012 conference in Edinburgh last July (see https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/hydra/Events%2C+presentations+and+articles) and the ongoing series of webinars that DuraSpace is hosting, covering all aspects of the Hydra project (details available at http://duraspace.org/hot-topics).  The event will build on these and enable more detailed discussion of points raised within them.

If you have any queries, please let me know.

Regards,

Chris Awre
