Sustainable energy for the 21st century: Can we ensure a bright future?

When: October 23 2012 18.20 – 20.30

Where: The British Library, 96 Euston Rd London NW1 2DB

Tickets: £5, Booking Required http://bit.ly/TNuDHl (refreshments provided)

A panel chaired by Fiona Harvey (The Guardian) with Kirk Shanks (Loughborough U.), Colin Snape (U. Nottingham), Phil Taylor (Durham U.) and Daniel Crean (U. Sheffield) will provide a variety of perspectives on the future of the UK’s energy mix, which will be followed by a discussion with the audience.

This provocative title aims to stimulate discussion on the following questions:

  • What is the UK’s current energy mix? Where does our energy come from, and how much do we import and export?
  • Why is our current situation unsustainable?
  • Is technology really enough to provide a sustainable energy future? What is the role of behavioural change and that of political institutions?
  • Is it actually possible to meet the Government’s energy targets without using fossil fuels or nuclear power?

TalkScience@bl is a quarterly café scientifique series where an expert provides a short, yet provocative introduction, followed by a discussion amongst an informed audience. This event is being held in partnership with the UK-ERC Network of Energy Centres for Doctoral Training.

Please pass this along to anybody you think might be interested. Hope to see a few psci-comm folk there!

All best,

Johanna
