The aim of BIC2013 is to contribute to further understanding of the construction, expression, and change of identity and the role of language in these processes, but by focusing specifically on communities living in borderland areas of the world. Communities living in border regions often experience more complex, multi-layered and/or fluid identities than those living in more central areas of states (cf. Donnan and Wilson (2012), A Companion to Border Studies, Blackwell). This is even more true of communities inhabiting territories where the border has shifted in recent history and places where, as is often the case, state borders do not coincide with ethno-linguistic ones. We aim to reach a better understanding of the role of language in the processes of identity construction, negotiation, expression and change, as is done in sociolinguistic and linguistic anthropological investigations, but we also look for interdisciplinary perspectives and dialogue and invite other approaches to the conference theme of "borders and identities" (e.g., sociology of language, cultural studies, political science, political anthropology, and other related social sciences). The language of the conference will be English. A whole-day excursion will be organized in the area of Rijeka on the third day of the conference on March 31, 2013. Rijeka is the largest city and the University of Rijeka the largest university in the multicultural and multilingual area of Istria and Kvarner, one of the most interesting, as well as beautiful, coastal regions of Croatia. This is also a prototypical borderland, criss-crossed by borders--historical, linguistic, cultural, administrative, and political. The latter moved and/or changed hands four times in the course of just the twentieth century. Call: The BIC2013 organising committee welcomes abstracts for oral and poster presentations on the theme of identity construction in borderland areas. Papers with a theme focusing on language (see some possible themes below) are of special interest, but other related perspectives are also welcome. Abstracts should be written in the English language. - language ideologies in borderlands - language variation and national/ethnic identities - language shift and shifting language status on changing borders - multi-layered identities and language behavior - disputed identities and language - languages as bridges, languages as borders Papers will be 20 minutes in length, followed by a 10-minute discussion period. Poster abstracts are invited as well. Anonymous 400-word abstracts (including references) should be submitted in PDF and Word formats. Please also state whether you wish your paper to be considered for an oral presentation or a poster if you have any preference. Decisions about the acceptance of papers/posters will be sent out to authors after November 30, 2012.
