How about a poorly preserved WWI POW camp barrack?

Dear Clare,

I'll see what I can turn up for you. Have you had a look at the EH Camp Report on the EH website, as this may give you some leads. As I said in my previous e-mail, the majority of the huts at your camp near Grants Houses, Horden appear to be 16-ft span Nissen huts, I have construction drawings for this type of hut including foundation plans. If you would like me to send them to you I can, but I presume it would be better to send them directly, rather than on the Forum, therefore, can you send me your e-mail to this address [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> .

Regards,

Roger

Hi all,

Firstly thank you for your responses in relation to military camps/Bevin boy camps/government training centres last week.

Sorry to return to this subject again, but if anyone has requested or carried out any groundworks at military camps, in particular civil defence/Bevin Boy accommodation camps I'd be interested to know what work was done and with what results? Or any research that has taken place (I only know of the YAC work at Cannock Chase so far). I have a site in Durham that is to be developed and due to a variety of constraints I can't now ask for a full programme of work so I'm hoping to compile a solid argument (set in a broadly national context if possible)to justify what will be a low level of intervention designed to yield maximum information. My current thought is to monitor strips targeted on different types of structure with a hope of a) assessing what foundations etc. might remain and b) recovering some material culture to perhaps allow an identification of function of the structures on the aerial photo.

I have attached the AP, I believe this is a camp (Horden camp attached for comparison). Horden camp was built for the mining trainees who were doing their training at the Government Training Centre at the nearby Horden colliery (from the Easington Rural District Council special war committees minutes Jan 1944). Annfield was the other training centre in Durham, and when I searched on the 40s AP I found the site shown that I believe is the associated camp.

Could you please mention this to whoever does DM in your office too? Thank you very much - any small shred of info greatly appreciated!
