Many thanks to all of you who have replied with very helpful advice both on and off list - the general feeling seems to be that either a low batter or possibly shoring are the only ways to go. For those who asked for more details of the topography - the site is a single burial about 2.5m up in a fairly steep and unstable sand cliff about 10m high, with the sea coming up to the base at high tide, and a golf course on the cliff top above. We are considering whether working from a MEWP might be possible, but will of course be taking advice from our own (Hartlepool Borough Council) H+S officers. We might just have to wait for the sea to do the job for us...

Subject: Digging in sand

Hi folks, does anyone know of any examples of safe excavation practice in unstable sand dune or sand cliff environments? References to published methodologies or contacts with relevant expertise (to my email address rather than the list) would be very welcome. My current feeling is it's too dangerous to attempt but I'm happy to be proved wrong.

Cheers, and with apologies for cross posting
