Can a journal club be held entirely online? Yes it can. We host a web
based program that allows users to create a journal club, give it a name,
search for papers via pubmed, upload the citation, or a link, or
(permissions pending) the full paper.

The system then walks users through developing a structured critique of the
internal validity of the paper (all health science research methods are
covered), they then extract data using a series of templates. The end
result is an online 'report' that can be viewed online by the rest of the
club, printed or emailed, and is attached to an online discussion forum that
all members of the club can participate in.

Informal evaluation has been promising, but its not a free resource.
However, it does also include suggestions and guidance for how to run a
journal club, and a comprehensive online user guide. iPad app is definately
on the list of things to do with this program.

You mentioned edmondo to facilitate your journal club - what exercises can
be held online to make the journal club more interesting? Can a journal club
be done solely online ?

What are your opinions?

>> Years ago when I attended the McMaster EBM course we had a session on
Jazzing up Journal Club- ways to make it more interesting. Over the years
here at UAB we have done a variety of things to make it more interesting.
>>
>> Currently we use Edmodo.com and post readings of background information,
give homework questions to have a threaded discussion where the residents
teach each other while answering questions. Our JC is also based around a
case that we solve. We have faculty "debates" during it that the residents
enjoy.
>>
>> In the past we have tried having it at faculty members' houses, moving it
to various places around campus, etc. We have set it up where one resident
team debates another team using the article. We always have food.
>>
>> What does your institution do that makes journal club a little more
interesting?
