After recently responding to the draft SEN legislation (UK), it seems that the government is returning the system back to post 1981 standards. Talk of 'best endeavours' and the like seem genuinely concerning.

Labels haven't gone untouched either with a suggestion that the bill could drop reference to special educational needs for 'learning difficulties and/or disabilities'. The distinction between emotional or behavioural difficulties and disability have been discussed in the literature, although clearly no one in government has read this, or perhaps cares either way.

In addition the proposed English Baccalaureate reforms also appear to be putting some at a distinct disadvantage. Presumably consultation responses will highlight the issues, but the government doesn't necessarily listen. OfQual have been fairly receptive to ideas on reasonable adjustments/access arrangements, but the government ignores them!

Subject: Special Schools as academies, whatever next?

Dear List Members.

I am attempting to write a book about special education, but still
can't quite decide on the title, but I digress. I have recently
learnt that my secondary school has grained academy status, having
already becoming a specialist sports college, and is now about to
become a Further Education College (pupils can stay until they are 25).

I'm wondering if they are trying to become an elite institution?
Stop the press!: Isn't the Government again trying to close down
these special schools?

Thoughts please?

Becky.
