I watched this with
great interest. The poems from the individuals, especially Lucy and Jagdev
were strong messages and revealed a powerful project BUT I found that in this
extract the voices of the young people were drowned by the commentary of the
adults working with them: and were these adults all non-disabled? Also, the
adult voices were all using a medical model perspective. It would have been
interesting to see what effect input from disability activists or disabled
poets working from a social model perspective would have had on
these young people. So, for me there were two aspects to this
documentary: One was the power of the young people and the second was
frustration at the professionals using medical model terminology.
Unfortunately the second interpretation won so that the final lines "I am not
disabled...I am just me" came across as negative and as a rejection of
identity as a disabled person.

I thought the documentary
was interesting and as I have worked with disabled people for quite a few
years and am disabled myself from my teenage years, think that personal
experience is the best way forward to tell able bodied people just what
being disabled is like. I often give disability talks myself and although I
aim them at all disabilities the groups are nearly always more interested in
how I manage with a severe visual impairment because they have someone in
front of them who they can see and ask questions of. I have also had other
disabled young people say that I am an inspiration to them because they too
can think about being able to get a job and have a fairly good
life.

BU have been working on a
project empowering young people with physical disabilities to share their
experiences of living with a disability through poetry and that part of the
project involves the production of a documentary. We’re sending the link to
