I had the same experience with the same
object. I came back from holiday to find two concentric arcs (from two different
days) of charred window sill. The arcs were burnt about 3mm deep and we were
lucky the house did not go up.
The lesson is never to put thick glass
objects (including vases etc) on window sills.

PS Also don’t store batteries in the
same drawer as steel wool. Another close shave…
