That is great!  You will be here for one of Amelia’s orchestra concerts.

I can’t wait to see you.

Take care

CALL FOR PAPERS

Risk, Pregnancy and Childbirth

Call for Papers for a special issue of Health, Risk and Society

Guest editors: Kirstie Coxon, Mandie Scamell and Andy Alaszewski

In the context of the contemporary debates about the role and nature of risk in

pregnancy and childbirth, we invite papers for a special issue of Health, Risk and

Society we plan to publish in 2013. We particularly welcome empirical papers which

focus on the ways that risk is constructed during pregnancy and birth, where the

intended outcome is the live birth of a viable infant; that is, in this special issue, we

do not propose to focus on risks in relation to birth technologies such as IVF, genetic

screening, or antenatal screening for congenital abnormalities. Rather, we welcome

contributions to the debate on risk and safety in birth, in the management of birth,

and on different proponent positions in relation to this. Each paper should be

informed by risk theory, and the contribution to social understandings of risk

knowledge made clear.

We have provided further information on the background and theme of this call

in an Editorial in Health, Risk & Society (Coxon, Scamell and Alaszewski 2012). We

invite submissions that explore one or more of the following issues:

. Risk and the everyday experience of pregnancy and childbirth

. ‘Managing’ birth: concepts of risk and time during labour

. Risk and the representation of pregnancy and childbirth: the media, accountablity

and blame

. Choice and decision making: who controls the pregnant body

This special issue will be published in 2013, probably in Volume 15.8. This will

ensure that any paper submitted by a UK-based academic is eligible for inclusion in

the 2013 REF exercise. The deadline for submitting papers, either original research

or critical reviews, via the journal website is 31/3/2013. Please consult the current

Health, Risk & Society guidelines for advice on word length, format and submission.

The editors are willing to discuss draft proposals and to look at outlines of potential

papers. These should be emailed to the guest editors:

Kirstie Coxon ([log in to unmask]) Mandie Scamell ([log in to unmask].

uk) Andy Alaszewski ([log in to unmask])
