italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies

You might try John Speed’s  A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World (London, 1627; reproduced Amsterdam: Orbis Terrarum, 1966). The section on the inhabitants of Italy is very amusing indeed.

Dear Colleagues:

I have recently begun a project on Italian masculinity and affect.  While the focus of the study will be "case studies" of particular works of art, literature, music, and film, I am currently seeking two kinds of sources:

1) Travel narratives wherein visitors to Italy comment upon Italian men's "emotionality," passion, affect, and so forth;
2) Attempts to theorize, to varying degrees, the role of masculine affect in everyday Italian life.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. As I am casting a rather wide net, if you feel a response risks trying the patience of other list-serve members, please feel free to respond off-list.

Best,
John
