In my opinion, sharing a PDF with your collegue by personal e-mail is fine. But it should never be posted in a public domain such as this group. Many publishers give the author the benefit of sharing on a personal basis. For example, Elsevier clearly states in the author's personal copy [most of us know this]"The attached copy is furnished to the author for internal non-commercial research and education use, including for instruction at the authors institution and sharing with colleagues. Other uses, including reproduction and distribution, or selling or licensing copies, or posting to personal, institutional or third party websites are prohibited.
"
So, this is what I usually do1. If it's a recent publication, mail the author2. If it's old, try 'google scholar' or 'scopus' first [yes you do get full PDF in google scholar sometimes, beside the 'related searchs' 'related articles' always help].3. If you still can't find it, mail to a list as this but make sure you get the PDF to your personal e-mail ID.self-moderation is the best way of moderation in any online group.cheersKoushikOn Tue, Sep 25, 2012 at 2:08 AM, Freddy Corredor <[log in to unmask]> wrote:But it is more unfortunate and totally unprofessional to make threads such as to unsubscribe to the list because one is unhappy with the content of a message. This is a type of censorship that should be totally rejected. I agree totally with Ruben Somoza’s comment that there is nothing wrong with requesting a pdf copy of a paper, as if the author(s) of such paper is part of this list, he or she or they could perfectly respond directly to the person making the request.

I agree that it is unfortunate to have requests for publications. I recommend that we ignore this transgression. This situation does not happen very often. I think it would be unfair to burden someone with the task of moderating the discussion.

Dear all,
I agree with Barb. If this continues I will have to unsubscribe, which is not what I want. At least let us know if this is in accordance with the policy of this site.

Hello all,
I had gotten the impression from the long email exchange only a few weeks ago that quite a few people feel that this kind of request is not an appropriate use of this list for all kinds of reasons ranging from infringement of copyright to clogging people's email inboxes with requests. I don't mean to be rude, but could the moderator please weigh on whether this is an appropriate use of this list?
Thanks,
