Dear David,

This is indeed an excellent list of discussion groups. For those with an interest in health in low- and middle-income countries, I would like to add HIFA2015 and our other four HIFA forums (below).

I would welcome other recommendations of health groups, especially in global health. The information on health groups is highly fragmented and confusing to users. Is anyone (other than David) doing anything to try to make it easier for users to know what is and what isn't available in the area of professional discussion groups on health issues? Especially in global health / health care in low and middle income countries?

Best wishes,
Neil

I strongly agree that this group is invaluable and needs to remain in its current format. It may be wise as well to back its content up on another list server such as Google Groups or Yahoo Groups to make sure cotent is not lost through one or another problem with the main  list.

.

It is hard to find lists of the same type as another list, but these links if not leading to outdated discussion group listings may be of interest to some on this list.

Healthecon-discuss is the general health economics discussion list.
Membership is open to all health economists (and all those interested in

for members of iHEA. The purpose of healthecon-discuss is to give a (previously

The list is international in membership and discussion reflects this.
Please remember discussions and announcements are for strictly health
economics issues, not general health or other matters.

Please feel free to contribute to the list and any discussions that
ensue.

The list is owned by Bruce Hollingsworth
(email: [log in to unmask])

The healthecon-discuss WWW site is at:
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/healthecon-discuss.html

NOTE: In order to access any files on the website
you first need to register with Jiscmail, using the instructions
given below.

Members of this list are automatically members of the health
economics "Superlist", healthecon-all. A message sent here is
distributed to all members of the three health economics jiscmail lists -
healthecon-discuss, HESG, and health-econometrics (the "sub-lists"). Each
sub-list member receives only one copy of the message, no matter how many
of the
sub-lists they are members of. The superlist is to be used for
announcements about health economics conferences, jobs etc. i.e. not discussion
matters. Although the superlist has its own jiscmail www page (for
archiving messages) it cannot be joined directly.
A further list health economists may be interested in joining is dea-health
concerned with non-parametric analysis
( http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/dea-health.html).

USING THE HEALTHECON-DISCUSS LIST

To have full access to Jiscmail facilities it is a good idea early
on to register with Jiscmail. You need to do this to be able to access the
website and to send messages to the list.

To do this you need to do the following:

1. Go to the website for the:

http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/healthecon-discuss.html

2. Click on the "Post to the JISCmail list" line.

You will be faced with a "Login required" screen

3. Click on the "get a new LISTSERV password first" line and
follow the instructions.

4. After your email address and password have been registered
(which is confirmed by jiscmail via email, and should not take more
than a few minutes), you will then be able to fully access the website
and send messages to the list.

For those unfamiliar with using Jiscmail,it is best to obtain
a copy of the Jiscmail User Guide. You can obtain the user guide by
doing the following:

1. Go to the Jiscmail website homepage at:

http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk

2. Click on "Documentation"

3. Click on "Complete user guide"

Here are some basic commands that you might use regularly. For a more
detailed description of Jiscmail commands refer to the user guide.

There are two main email addresses which are used. The first
is for all Jiscmail administrative commands, such as joining
and leaving the list, suspending mail, retrieving files etc.
These should be sent to the address

[log in to unmask]

The second is for contributions to the list. Simply send
an email message to

[log in to unmask]

This will then be sent to all members of the list. (Note that in order
to send a message to the list you first need to register with
Jiscmail, using the instructions given above).

You can reply to list messages in two ways; to the whole list
or just to the person who sent the message to which you are
replying. The default "Reply-to" field is the originator of
the message; you can override this, but think carefully before
doing so.

Dear David and all,

This list is one of the best and I would like to see it stay as it is. My only suggestion would be to have increased moderation to identify and cut out spam.

Incidentally, I would be interested to learn of any similar successful discussion groups (ie discussing issues, in depth, on quality in health care at a global level) that are primarily web-based rather than primarily email-based. My experience to date is that the most dynamic, in-depth discussion groups are primarily email-based rather than primarily web-based.

Best wishes

Neil

This list is on an academic Listserv server, one that covers many or all colleges and universities in Great Britain.  It is my experience that the many if not all of the discussion groups are
publically archived. Listserv permits members to not receive mail through the option of "temporarily" stopping mail which if not changed is in fact permanent. These lists are not dividable
into threads, that, as far as I know is not in Listserv software, I run several lists on the Temple University Listserv server. Hence anyone can turn this list into a bulletin board by either
not subscribing and reading this list on the web in its public archives, or they can subscribe and set themselves to get no mail and achieve the same result and the added benefit of being able
to post to the list.  A bulletin only or website only based group puts all users at a disadvantage as they will need to copy and paste any messages they want to keep in their own files,
without, as I see it any counterbalancing benefits. Such a decision would also remove this list from a very prestigious and respected academic collection of excellent discussion groups.
