1. Lead Discovery Scientist/Postdoc - Structure-Kinetics Relationships (m/f)

Bayer Pharma AG, Berlin

Bayer Healthcare Global Drug Discovery together with industrial and academic partners has established a program to investigate the dynamics of drug binding to their molecular targets and the relationship between drug-target residence time and pharmacological profile. To support this program, we are looking for highly skilled and motivated scientists (m/f) with a strong scientific background and relevant expertise in the use of Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) and other biophysical methods. Among other tasks, successful applicants (m/f) will design, develop, and implement SPR and other biophysical assays suitable for the characterization of the interactions between small organic molecules and drug targets.

Job description

As a Lead Discovery Scientist (m/f) at Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals in Berlin, you will drive the progression of your project independently. The focus of your scientific work will be the elucidation of Structure-Kinetics Relationships (SKRs) of a diverse set of target proteins and small molecules, thereby enabling a broader understanding of kinetics in drug discovery. Your projects will integrate a wide variety of technologies, including SPR, ITC, and X-ray structure analysis that are focused to describe molecular aspects of binding kinetics in vitro. You will be embedded in a highly collaborative cross-disciplinary academic and industrial research consortium. You will be expected and highly encouraged to patent and/or publish your results in peer reviewed journals and present your results at international conferences.

The project is scheduled for a five year period.

Your qualifications

Your profile includes a PhD in biochemistry, biophysics or molecular biology with significant experience in biophysics including kinetic methods (e.g. SPR) and thermodynamic methods (e.g. ITC). You have experience in protein expression (insect cell, mammalian, bacterial), purification and characterization of protein-ligand complexes. You have a profound understanding of the determinants that drive protein-ligand interactions and you are experienced in protein structure determination by X-ray crystallography. Hands-on experience in working with membrane proteins will be a distinct advantage. You have demonstrated your high creativity and independent contributions to science. You are a person with outstanding problem solving ability and willingness to undertake challenging scientific tasks. You have strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.

Your application

We offer a competitive salary and benefits package and support both individual and professional development. Applications for this position should be made online at www.myBayerjob.de, submitting a cover letter, your CV and references.

2. Lead Discovery Scientist/Postdoc -Biophysical Assays (m/f)

Job description

As a Lead Discovery Scientist (m/f) at Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals in Berlin, you drive the progression of your project independently. You will put a special focus on the deployment of new technological approaches aiming to expand the target spectrum covered by biophysical methods and to increase their performance and throughput. You will periodically report the status and results of your research activities at internal and external meetings, as well as in patents and scientific publications.

The project is scheduled for a five year period.

Your qualifications

You have a PhD degree in Biochemistry, Biophysics or similar field, with in-depth knowledge of enzymology, molecular pharmacology and biophysics. You are a highly creative person with outstanding problem solving ability and willingness to undertake challenging assay development tasks. Relevant hands-on experience with the SPR technology is mandatory, while experience with other assay technologies (incl. fluorescence based methods like TR-FRET) would be of great advantage. A profound understanding of other methodologies relevant for this field is desired (i.e. protein expression, purification and structure determination by NMR or X-ray crystallography), and proficiency with analysis software for complex datasets (e.g. Spotfire, Genedata etc.) would be a plus. Your profile is rounded off by strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication, and the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
