Reaching Out! Heritage and Diversity Seminar.

25th October, 2pm-5.30pm at UK Centre for Carnival Arts, Luton, LU1 3JA.

Engaging with hard to reach communities and uncovering hidden histories are essential activities for today’s heritage organisations. However, this can sometimes be a daunting task and one that not everyone feels confident to undertake. The Carnival Archive Project is holding a seminar looking at how heritage organisations can increase the diversity of the communities with which they engage. This seminar offers practical advice, case studies and reassurance about how to improve the engagement activities of your organisation.

Seminar attendees will be helped to work out what their barriers to engagement are and how these can be worked around. There will plenty of opportunities to discuss the obstacles you face in your organisation and receive practical advice from our speakers on the day. If there is anything you would especially like to discuss then you can send your question in advance and we will try and ensure it is covered during the seminar.

There will be talks from:

Nick Barratt on Personal Heritage.
Nick is the founder of Sticks Research Agency and Editor in Chief of Your Family History magazine. He has worked on programmes including House Detectives and Seven Wonders of the Industrial World, as well as being the lead researcher on Who Do You Think You Are?

Tola Dabiri on Increasing Diversity In Your Organisation
Tola managed projects in libraries across North London before joining MLA South East as the Regional Library Development Manager. She later transferred to MLA Council where she was responsible for workforce development and equality and diversity policy.

Helen Ball on Practical Engagement - Advice and Case Studies
Helen is Head of Engagement Services at Audiences London where she supports cultural organisations to engage with, and better understand, their local communities. She runs Audience London’s community engagement network, a programme of on-going seminars and events as well as manages community engagement, research, consultancy services and projects.

Morcea Walker on Working with the Traveller Community
Morcea was a founder member of the Northampton West Indies Parents' Association, and was heavily involved with the Northants Black History Association. She also runs the Northampton Carnival Arts Consortium and resurrected the Northampton Carnival in 2005. In 2012 was awarded an MBE for her work in the community and with young people.

The seminar will end at 5.30pm. However, it will be followed by food, music and traditional Caribbean storytelling from renowned storyteller Morcea Walker. This will finish at 7pm.
