Photographic Archive Volunteer Roles - National Railway Museum, York

Dear List,

I would be grateful if you could pass this on to anyone who you think may be interested.

The National Railway Museum, York is looking for volunteers to assist our photographic curators with a digitisation project.

For application forms and details of how to apply please see the following webpage

http://www.nrm.org.uk/NRM/GetInvolved/Volunteer.aspx

The project

This is a pilot project working with the NRM photographic curators to digitise photographic reference prints to a basic standard and make them accessible to researchers.  The majority of the reference prints are currently held in a collection of over 800 binders in an archive store, and are retrieved for users on demand. This project aims to increase access to this collection through the provision of simple scans for commercial use or for in-house projects exhibitions etc.

Volunteer duties will include:

·       Working systematically through the reference binders, checking them against the existing database and digitising all of the ‘uncaptured’ images they contain using a flatbed scanner.

·       Inputting information into a spreadsheet or a database

·       Enhancing photographic records

·       Help make these collections accessible for use in research, exhibitions, digitisation or reproduction

·       Help to describe collections, including assisting with the basic groundwork for ISAD-G compliant descriptions

This project gives volunteers the opportunity to get involved with a major archive within a national museum. It will also allow the successful candidates to develop skills in the area of handing, identifying, documenting and rationalising photographic collections and give them practical experience of archival and museum processes, standards and procedures.

·       Experience how the archive service fulfils its mission on an annual and daily basis

·       Gain knowledge of organisational/service functions (acquisition, preservation, access)

·       Be given specific experience of an archives/museum role (e.g. filing, surveying, storage, retrieval, description)

·       Attend staff meetings (staff briefing)

·       Gain knowledge of archival processes, standards, procedure (cataloguing, preservation, etc)

·       Interact with client groups (external users, internal colleagues)

Many thanks
