L,

A friend used to live in Ripplebrook, a small farming community down Gippsland way in Victoria. He had occasion to visit one of the crusty ol timers there to deliver something or other and he noticed the front door step had a remarkable solidity about it. Turned out the old bloke had cleared the trees from his own property with handsaw and horse and cart and this step was made from one of the original gums. Trying to use nails on it was useless. They just snapped. A drill had to be used so that nails could be inserted. Also this bloke and his wife were known communists. Known because there was one communist candidate who received three votes each election, one from himself and the other two form tree feller and wife. So ... no safe seat but safe bet that he'd get his three votes. And probably a possy on that safest of all steps.
