Most asthmatics know there own symptoms well and are usually aware of what triggers there asthma, i would be asking
what type of medication are they on? have they been changed since the attack?
where they using the medication? you would be suprised of how many people who have asthma dont use their inhalers, preventers can take a couple of weeks to become effective so although this is the main medication some people dont see it this way as it doesen't give them the instant relief that the releiver medication does, hence don't take it and an asthma attack can result
how often where they having to use their reliever prior to the attack?
is it seasonal? some people are worse in the summer than in the winter and vice versa and use there inhalers accordingly, some use it all year round and it could be exercise induced asthma
has anything changed both at home, it could be they have a new pet or are having building work done
when was the last time they saw there practice nurse for a asthma review and where they using the inhaler correctly, again many asthmatics will sometimes slip into bad habits and not use the correct technique and so dont get the medication into their lungs. that is why when they go to the nurse for a asthma review they are asked to take their medication so the nurse can assess their technique.
hope some of this helps
