Dear All, I'm not qualified to get into the best way of capture and/or modelling a 3D model of your boat lift, but sounds like it has potential. Most discussion I have seen, seems about capture, but not delivery. I would be interested to hear what people believe will be the most likely open technology for presenting the output of such models, especially on the web to end-users. In other words: how will we get 3D content to people, and how will this be done in an open way without bespoke platforms, players and plug-ins? I would expect that the 3d engine technology was invented, fine-tuned and established some years ago withing the gaming industry, but gaming techs usually require bespoke downloads and/or plugins to render and play (mainly because they are subscription-based) I am interested in how far away the world is from having a free open source platform for 3D models and their manipulation. That would be rather good. I may not know enough about the current stats of 3d, but the discussions don't seem to tend to mention how it will be delivered, and interoperability etc. My suspicion is that for real 3D modelling and manipulation of 3d vectors, it may be a while before it is mainstream open source. However, I would think the tools to make pseudo 3D interactives probably are mainstream. That is, use a set of rendered images and/or video with HTML5 controls to manipulate them. In previous jobs, I have dabbled in Blender http://www.blender.org/ which was powerful, but I don't recall it having any web player/platform for interactive use. It could I think export animations to video though, and could easily be used to render multiple view images for a rotation for pseudo - 3d. I used to use 3D Swift for doing making 3d models and exporting to Flash, but that was not open, of course. Worked a treat though. http://www.erain.com/ The software is proprietary, but I think that it may export a number of more open formats besides Flash. Anyone know of any attempts to create an open platform for 3D player and associated developer tools? They are using laser technology to map ten of the world's significant heritage locations. We have photographs etc, and models but we believe that modern technology would bring the lift alive. We are talking to a couple of people including Norwich University but we are keen that we get the most innovative animated model possible. Have you any experience of a company who may be able to do this work?
