Health and Social Care Integration in the New Policy Landscape

A joint seminar supported by the Socialist Health Association and the UK Social Policy Association

Friday 12th October

Over the past year reports by the Local Government Association, NHS Future Forum and Kings Fund have all restated the importance of closer collaboration between health and social care. The 2012 Social Care White Paper also promises new measures to promote integrated care and joined-up services. 

However, the wider policy landscape is changing rapidly.  Clinical Commissioning Groups, the provision of NHS care by ‘any qualified provider’, the extension of personal budgets across social care and the piloting of personal health budgets all mean that it is time to take a fresh look at research evidence and analysis.  What are the current barriers to collaboration and how can these be overcome? What does ‘successful’ integration look like and how can it be measured?  What  evidence is there that integration delivers cost savings, or better outcomes for patients and service users?  Do telecare and telemedicine have roles to play in promoting collaboration?  And how does integration between health and social care fit into the policy landscape of choice and personalisation?

This event is a unique partnership between an academic and a policy organisation. It brings together researchers and academics, policy commentators, statutory and third sector providers of health and social care services, managers, clinicians and other practitioners.  

We seek offers of papers reporting new empirical research and/or policy analysis. We are particularly interested in papers that:

• Cover a range of health and social care services, settings and user groups
•  Include a focus on outcomes for patients/service users
• Offer lessons for England from other countries of the UK
