BRITISH SOCIOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2013

CALL FOR PAPERS – RACE AND ETHNICITY STREAM

The conference, with the theme of `Engaging Sociology’, will be held Wednesday 3rd – Friday 5th April 2013 at the Grand Connaught Rooms, London WC2B 5DA (close to Holborn Underground station).

Although the Race and Ethnicity Study Group expects many abstracts to offer reports on the findings of research conducted in Britain, it sees its field as international in scope, and its members hope to learn from comparative and historical studies. The Group welcomes the critical evaluation of earlier research, the reconsideration of conceptual issues, and reflections upon teaching about race and ethnicity at the undergraduate level.

We expect some contributions to discuss how best to account for any distinctiveness of racial and ethnic relations, seen both as interpersonal relations and, possibly in quantitative terms, as accounting for social stratification. Many such studies will focus on particular institutional areas, such as those of equality in civil and political rights, or in respect of social mobility, employment, housing, health, education and cultural activities such as sport.

Though studies of social attitudes and community studies have traditionally been to the fore, the demography of modern Britain is changing with the growth in the number of persons who acknowledge more than one ethnic origin. This has led to an interest in conceptions of identity. It has stimulated research into intersectionality, involving the associations of ethnic origin with differences of gender and religious faith. Papers may take up the resulting questions of public policy provided they remain sociological in character.

Members wish our 2013 meetings to include a focus on the fragmentation of work in our field. In future years the focus will doubtless shift, but in considering the abstracts submitted for paper sessions at the annual conference, the stream coordinators (who for 2013 are Harpreet Bains and Michael Banton) will consider all proposals referred to them by the BSA whether or not they fall into any of the categories mentioned in this call.

Abstracts of proposed contributions should be sent to the BSA before 5 October 2012. Notifications of acceptance
or rejection will be sent as soon as possible after 16 November 2012.
