UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM CANCER RESEARCH UK CLINICAL TRIALS UNIT, SCHOOL OF CANCER SCIENCES BIOSTATISTICIAN AND SENIOR BIOSTATISTICIAN (Note new extended deadline to August 21st 2012) This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest of the National Cancer Research Institute Accredited Trials Units in the UK. The Unit is part of the School of Cancer Sciences which includes the first of Cancer Research UK’s major research institutes to be promoted to national Cancer Centre status. The Unit has an extensive portfolio of phase II and III clinical trials in adults covering a wide range of cancer disease sites and has one of the most active early drug development teams in the country. The Unit also includes the Children’s Cancer Trials Team with a large portfolio of trials across a range of paediatric tumours, with the particular methodological challenges associated with trials in rare diseases. The Unit also hosts a haematology trials team funded by Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research specifically supporting phase II trial development in haematology, including paediatrics, on a national level. The CRCTU has positions available for a Senior Biostatistician (Grade 8) and a Biostatistician (Grade 7). These posts will mainly involve working on the early phase haematology and adult trials but with some opportunity to work across a broader range of cancer types within the trials portfolio. Biostatisticians play a central role in the Unit, actively liaising with clinical investigators, contributing to the design and conduct of clinical trials, being responsible for interim and final analysis of clinical trial data and having a key role in the presentation and publication of results. As academic members of the University, Biostatisticians contribute to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level. For the post of Senior Biostatistician, the successful candidate would have at least 5 years experience and be expected to take the statistical lead of projects within a fairly short time of appointment. The CRCTU is actively involved in researching statistical methodology related to clinical trials and associated translational research and is closely affiliated with the Midland Hub for Trials Methodology Research funded by the Medical Research Council. Opportunities exist for members of the team to pursue their own research interests and carry out postgraduate qualifications. The successful candidate will be working at the Robert Aitken building which has been refurbished by Advantage West Midlands (AWM) through Birmingham Science City: Translational Medicine Clinical Research Infrastructure and Trials Platform.
