Subject: Mandatory E&D Training

Hello

Our PVC has asked me to do a quick survey of other institutions to find out:

  1. Do you have mandatory induction that includes an element of E&D? Yes, both organisational & local department/service induction. Organisation: we have half a day with lunch for new staff. Locally@ there is an induction checklist with E&D embedded for managers to use with new staff.
  2. Do you have mandatory E&D training? Yes. A 3 hour face to face session, entitled: Respecting Diversity, for all new staff as otherwise they cannot pass their probation, and as a refresher for existing staff. (Plus we have 3 online courses (provided by MarshallACM) for staff but these are not mandatory, just strongly recommended. They are: Diversity at Work for all staff, Bullying & Harassment for all staff & Bullying & Harassment for managers (they last just over an hour each), plus online EIA training provided by Marshalls again (one hour & 30 mins), as well as face to face EIA sessions (1 hour). I also offer bespoke E&D courses but these are not mandatory obviously, we also provide some disability awareness lunchtime sessions, again non-mandatory).
  3. if yes – how many sessions/hours etc a year? Minimum could be 12 of each of the Induction & the Respecting Diversity sessions in one year to as many as required such as over 40 sessions provided to date this year alone.
  4. Do you have mandatory Recruitment and Selection training for all recruiting managers? Yes. These are one day long. Again can easily deliver 12 in a year or as many as required, through HR & staff development.
  5. How is attendance monitored? Through the Staff Development database using Staff ID employment numbers and attendance on courses records, people have to sign a register at the course they are attending and after the course this is confirmed on the database and entered into their Training & Development Records available on the system. If they have not attended or have transferred onto another date, this is recorded. We provide quarterly & annual reports to HR Committee & E&D Sub-Committee on attendance on these courses. Plus as I stated earlier it is monitored by HR too if not attended during probation.

Thanks

Lesley
