Dear psci-commers,

Sharing details of our bioinformatics training course for secondary
school biology teachers. Please share through your networks/colleagues
if you think this is relevant to them.

Best regards,

Louisa

The European Bioinformatics Institute, Europe's hub for biological data,
runs an annual training course (LearningLab) to help European science
teachers familiarise themselves with the data revolution in molecular
biology.

Applications for the 2012 ELLS LearningLab on Biology 2.0 - making sense
of biological data
<http://www.ebi.ac.uk/training/onsite/121126_ELLS.html>are now open. The
Biology 2.0 LearningLab will provide an interactive introduction to the
field of bioinformatics, a central part of modern biology that can be
used effectively in the classroom to teach biological concepts. The
course will run for two full days from Monday 26 - Tuesday 27 November
2012 and be held at the European Bioinformatics Institute
<www.ebi.ac.uk> (EBI) in Hinxton, near Cambridge, UK.

Places on this course are limited to 35 and the deadline for
applications is 12 September 2012. The course registration fee is £100.

During the 2-day course, a combination of seminars, discussions and
hands-on activities will:
- Introduce you to the different types of biological information that
are stored in public databases, and how to find this information;
- Look at genetic variation and its link with disease;
- Discuss the ethics of personal genomics;
- Update your knowledge on current biological research and introduce our
scientists;
- Illustrate a range of classroom activities and equip you to use the
freely available bioinformatics resources to support your teaching of
biology;
- Include a visit to a world-class sequencing facility;
- Allow you to network and share your experiences with teachers from
around Europe.

Furthercourse information, includingthe course outline, details of the
application procedure, travel and accommodation information can be
viewed at http://www.ebi.ac.uk/training/onsite/121126_ELLS.html. We are
able to offer three bursaries to help meet other costs associated with
attending the course and these will be awarded based on justification
provided by applicants at the registration stage.

The course is open to all European high-school and further education
science teachers. The activities featured are ideal for use with
students aged between 16-19 years old but may also be applicable for
younger students. Course attendees should be familiar with use of the
internet but no specialist computing skills are required. Please note
that the course will be run in English.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Best regards,

Louisa
