Theme, Scope and Focus:

In his provocative article ‘Welcome to Postnormal Times’ Sardar (2010) argues that chaos, complexity, and contradictions are central to what he suggests to call “postnormal times”. Growing connectivity and growing globalisation are resulting in growing complexity but at the same time they give rise to new methodologies of value creation. Sardar goes on to write that

The most important ingredients for coping with postnormal times, I would argue, are imagination and creativity. Why? Because we have no other way of dealing with complexity, contradictions and chaos. Imagination is the main tool, indeed I would suggest the only tool, which takes us from simple reasoned analysis to higher synthesis. While imagination is intangible, it creates and shapes our reality; while a mental tool, it affects our behaviour and expectations. We will have to imagine our way out of the postnormal times. The kind of futures we imagine beyond postnormal times would depend on the quality of our imagination. Given that our imagination is embedded and limited to our own culture, we will have to unleash a broad spectrum of imaginations from the rich diversity of human cultures and multiple ways of imagining alternatives to conventional, orthodox ways of being and doing. (p. 443)

Sardar’s essay raises a host of interesting questions and possibilities which some will be elaborated on by the first keynote speaker of our expert-seminar, Professor Alfonso Montuori of the Transformative Inquiry Department at California Institute of Integral Studies. He argues that creativity is transforming in the West from the individualistic/atomistic view of Modernity towards a more contextualised, collaborative, complex approach. In his presentation Montuori will address several aspects of creativity that are particularly relevant to the discussion of postnormal times.

Paul Rutten, independent researcher and visiting Professor in Creative Industries and Innovation at Antwerp University will then reflect on the declaration of the creative industries as a national priority sector by the government in the Netherlands. The morning plenary session is designed to bring together both academics and practitioners to discuss the theoretical and practical relevance of creativity in such challenging times.

The day will be introduced by Diane Nijs, Associate Professor in Imagineering at NHTV.

In the afternoon, there will be an expert meeting for which we welcome contributions on following themes:

- Creative industries

- Creativity and innovation

- Creative clusters

- Creativity and complexity

- Creative cities and creative regions

- Creative development policies

- Creativity and events

- Creativity and imagineering

- Creativity and storytelling

The Expert Meeting is designed as a small-scale event for researchers to present and discuss their work with colleagues. Please submit an abstract of your proposed submission (maximum 300 words) to Lénia Marques ([log in to unmask]) at the Academy for Leisure at NHTV Breda by 30th September 2012.
