medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Herewith a link to an earlier 'Saints of the day' for 3. July (including St. Thomas, apostle; St. Heliodorus of Altino; St. Leo II, pope):

Further to Thomas:

In that earlier post's notice of this saint, add this at the end of the third paragraph:
Such is the view of the archdiocese of Lanciano-Ortona. It has been observed by others that this relief said to have accompanied Thomas' relics from Chios to Ortona seemingly portrays rather a medieval monastic saint of the same name (note the head covering and, in the Greek-language inscription, OSIOS instead of the AGIOS one would expect of a major early saint):

On Patmos the monastery of St. John the Theologian preserves a skull believed to be that of Thomas the Apostle:

In the same notice, add at the outset of 'Other dedications to T.' these links to illustrated, English-language and Italian-language pages on the originally earlier twelfth-century chiesa / rotonda di San Tomè / San Tomaso in Lemine, situated in Almenno di San Bartolomeo (BG) in Lombardy:

In the same notice, in 'Some portraits of T.', add at the outset this link to an expandable view of Thomas (at upper right; at upper left, St. Mercurius) as portrayed on a leaf of the mid-tenth-century ivory Harbaville Triptych in the Musée du Louvre in Paris:

and this link to a view of Thomas as depicted in the earlier eleventh-century mosaics (restored betw. 1953 and 1962) of the katholikon of the monastery of Hosios Loukas near Distomo in Phokis:

In the same notice, at item a) in 'Some portraits of T.', for 'chiesa di Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio' please read 'basilica di Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio'.

In the same notice, after item a) in ''Some portraits of T.', add these links to views of Thomas as depicted in the later twelfth-century frescoes (betw. 1176 and 1200) of the church of St. George in Staraya Ladoga (Leningrad oblast):

In the same notice, at item b) in 'Some portraits of T.', please note that both here and later in this notice the links to illuminations in manuscripts at the BnF in Paris still work but the image server there is not co-operating.

In the same notice, after item b) in 'Some portraits of T.' this link to a view of Thomas as depicted in a fresco of ca. 1300, attributed to Manuel Panselinos, in the Protaton church on Mt. Athos:
http://tinyurl.com/3vdpetk
and this link to a view of Thomas' martyrdom as depicted in the earlier fourteenth-century frescoes (betw. ca. 1312 and 1321/1322) in the nave of the monastery church of the Theotokos at Gračanica in, depending upon one's view of the matter, either the Republic of Kosovo or Serbia's province of Kosovo and Metohija:

and this link to a view of Thomas as depicted in a later fourteenth-century Novgorod School panel painting (1360s?) now in the Russian Museum, St. Petersburg:

In 2011 Gordon Plumb posted further depictions of Thomas, all in glass:

In the same notice, after item j) in 'Some portrayals of the Doubting (or the Incredulity) of St. Thomas' [there's another in a window panel in Exeter cathedral linked to in the aforementioned post by by Gordon Plumb] this link to an expandable view of a late thirteenth-century panel painting of this subject by Michael Astrapas and Eutychios, formerly in the church of the Peribleptos (now Sv. Climent Novi) in Ohrid and now in the adjacent Icon Gallery there:

In the same notice, at item h) in 'Some portrayals of the Doubting (or the Incredulity) of St. Thomas' add this detail view of Thomas and Christ in the fresco:

In the same notice, the link at item m) in 'Some portrayals of the Doubting (or the Incredulity) of St. Thomas' no longer takes one to the requisite image. Use this instead:

In the same notice, a wider set of visuals for the paragraph beginning 'Deriving from T.'s Doubting' and having to do with Thomas' legendary receipt of the Holy Belt is here:

To which add this link to a view of this subject as depicted in the east window of the St. Nicholas chapel in All Saints', North Moreton (Oxon; photograph courtesy of Gordon Plumb):

Further to Heliodorus of Altino:

In that earlier post's notice of this saint, the link to the distance view of the apse mosaic in Torcello's former cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta no longer takes one to the requisite image. Use this instead:

Further to Leo II:

In that earlier post's notice of this saint, neither the initial link to a view of ancient columns in the nave of Rome's Santa Bibiana nor the following one to a view better showing the base of one of these still functions. Use these instead:
