medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Dear Laura,

I did notice your recent queries about the faces on tomb effigies. I have done some such work in France, though mostly not yet posted; see e.g. http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/Clemence.html . I looked up the particular figures you were asking about, and they certainly have been placed high up on the wall. (That seems like a rather peculiar thing to do, at least to a non-Italianist!). Good profile views of the effigies that you want should be obtainable without too much trouble with a long lens. Frontal views are probably impossible without a ladder or something else to stand on (sometimes permitted), particularly for a short person like me (just under 5'). It appears likely that I will be in Padua, so if you'd like me to do what I can, please contact me off-list.

And for you and others on the list interested in such things-- please feel free to send me lists of particular desiderata. Except for commissioned work, I never know exactly where I will wind up until I get there!

best,
Genevra

This is a most thoughtful offer.  Thank you.

I'm not sure if this is your sort of thing, but I'm really interested in the faces of medieval and renaissance portrait sculptures (usually tomb effigies, but there are also some statues, and busts from later in the period).  What I most need are photos that are as close to true frontal and true profile views as possible- and of course these are the most difficult to get.  But if you find yourself with the opportunity to take any such images, I'd be most grateful.

There are particular Italian examples that I'd be especially keen on, but in most cases they are in awkward positions (usually high up or in very dark situations) so I don't think it would be fair to ask you to go out of your way on the off-chance of their being snappable.  Once your itinerary is settled though, please let us know what it is, as I may then ask you to have a go.

All best

Laura
