'Floruit/flourished' abbreviated to 'fl.' is exactly what I was looking for to indicate activity, and combined with 'd.' (for 'decessit/died) it has the advantage of being comprehensible in English as well as Latin. In combination, 'fl.' and 'd.' will cover the case that got me thinking about this in the first place. But it doesn't quite cover the fact that, in what I suspect is the majority of cases from the medieval period, 'd.' is actually indicating 'dead by' rather than 'died'. We can always indicate that the evidence for the date is the first occurence of 'quondam', and maybe we take this as read, but its easy to see how error can creep in. In the particular instance that's prompted me to ask, I want to refer to someone who is documented as active 1268-1287, and referred to as 'quondam' in 1289. 'd.1289' doesn't account for the possibility that he died in 1287 or 1288, and it seems clunky to spell this out in the text if there's a good abbreviated way to do it.
