The main website has a number of excellent free alerting news bulletins- including earthwatch and the SD-Cite: IISD Research Library Database <http://sd-cite.iisd.org/> which indexes articles, reports and other major news stories covering all aspects of sustainable development. Links to free internet sites are provided where available.

The Dalai lama has recently been visiting the uk. Hear his speech and discussion of hope and ethics for the modern world from the LSE. Transcripts of other key messages can be viewed/ seen on his official website <http://dalailama.com/messages> . http://dalailama.com/messages

http://www.prio.no/Data/

Britain from Above <http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/>

http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/
Fascinating project which is based on the Aerofilms collection, a aerial photographic archive of Britain which comprises several thousand photographs taken from 1919-2006, offering a unique insight into the changing landscape. It could be used for charting urbanisation and changing land use. It also has overhead shots of key landmarks. The collection was bought by Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), English Heritage (EH), and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales (RCAHMW) from Blom ASA in 2007. They are now scanning items for free access on the web. The first section of images 1919-1953 are online. Many have limited information on location and the public/ researchers are being invited to help catalogue them.

There are galleries to browse by location, for instance see this image of Wimbledon from 1926 <http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/image/epw015875?search=wimbledon%201921&ref=4>

Researchers of Tomorrow (The Research Behaviour of Generation Y Doctoral Students) <http://pressandpolicy.bl.uk/Press-Releases/The-results-are-in-major-study-into-the-behavioural-habits-of-the-Generation-Y-PhD-students-released-by-JISC-and-the-British-Library-5ad.aspx>

Latest update from this ongoing project which is being managed by UK by JISC and the British Library. It is based on Generation Y students, those born between between 1983-1992. Over 17,000 have been interviewed as part of the project, this section of the research focused upon researchers’ use of social media applications within the research setting

The full report can be read from here. <http://www.jisc.ac.uk/publications/reports/2012/researchers-of-tomorrow> http://www.jisc.ac.uk/publications/reports/2012/researchers-of-tomorrow
One surprising finding was a move away from primary data (newspapers, archives towards secondary published research) which could have implications for future research provision in libraries) and was identified by the report as needing further research.
A lack of understanding of open access issues- how to put author documents online, the use of repository material in research (ie is it authentic enough?) take up of new technology for doctorial research is slow. Students may use social media in everyday life but are often slow to adopt it in research settings.
