Italian Literature and Religion

October 11-13, 2012
The debate on the role of the Church in the civil society reignited again in Italy recently. The coincidence of the half-century anniversary of the opening of Vatican II too often reduces the debate to an evaluation of the Church activities in the contemporary period. Apart from the political significance and the inevitable consequences in the forthcoming electoral debate, one cannot avoid considering the importance of the historical dimension of the vexata quaestio: a controversial issue of identity for the Italian culture that has lasted for centuries. With this in mind, we are proposing a conference on this theme without any chronological limitation regarding authors (and writings) to be included in the discussion from Dante to Manzoni, from Gioberti to Rebora.
Papers should be approximately 20 minutes in length and may be either in Italian or English.

Proceedings of Conference (Full Papers)
All speakers will be required to submit their final version of their paper by December 31, 2012 for inclusion in the Proceedings. Articles will be peer-reviewed. Guidelines for the full paper will be posted on the conference website. The proceedings will be published in 2013.

Letteratura Italiana e Religione
University of Toronto
11-13 ottobre 2012
Di recente si è riacceso il dibattito sul ruolo della Chiesa nella società civile e, complice l'anniversario che ricorda che mezzo secolo è già trascorso dall’apertura del concilio Vaticano II, esso si traduce spesso in un bilancio dell'azione ecclesiastica in età moderna.Al di là del significato politico e delle inevitabili conseguenze elettorali della discussione in atto, non si può evitare di interrogarsi sull’importanza della dimensione storica, addirittura identitaria, della vexata quaestio nella cultura italiana. Una proficua meditazione sul tema è quanto ci si propone di realizzare con questo convegno, senza limitazioni di carattere cronologico sulla scelta di autori (e testi letterari) posti in discussione, da Dante a Manzoni, da Gioberti a Rebora.
La durata di ogni relazione non deve superare i 20 minuti. Le relazioni possono essere in italiano o in inglese.
