The successful applicant will join our GIS team and contribute to taking our map based products to the next level. The work will involve liaising with researchers, managers and IT teams in order to incorporate GIS into our work flow, research and products.

Applicants should have a qualification in GIS and relevant experience, preferably in one or more of the following areas: environment, ecology, health, climate change, water, international development, mining or energy. They should also have strong quantitative and analytical modelling skills, a deep understanding of GIS concepts and developments in the sector as well as advanced technical IT skills. A global outlook and relevant international working experience is highly desired.

The position will require an ability to manage time and GIS projects effectively and work in a pressurised environment. Applicants should be innovative and creative with strong interpersonal communication skills, comfortable working independently as well as in an interdisciplinary multi-cultural team with formal peer review.

Principal responsibilities will include:

The production of high quality maps to tight deadlines in a variety of formats
Assistance with the maintenance of the global data warehouse including meta-data

Essential skills include:

A sound understanding of spatial data structures and fundamental concepts of GIS
High level of competence with the ESRI ArcGIS product suite
Spatial database design and management (preferably ESRI GDB and/or PostgreSQL/PostGIS)
Scripting experience (VBA, Python, SQL)
Excellent attention to detail

Highly desirable although non-essential skills include:

Working knowledge of open source GIS applications and frameworks
Knowledge and experience of geo-statistical methods used in spatial analysis
Good overview of the availability of global GIS datasets
OGC standards such as WMS, WFS
